The German DIY retailer Praktiker is to open its first store in Kiev on 12 March 2010. This will be the company’s fourth unit in Ukraine. The store will have 9,500 m² of retail area. The size of the investment required for the launch has not been disclosed.
In the summer of 2008 Praktiker announced that it aimed to reach a store count of 25 outlets in Ukraine by opening 3-5 units every year. However, at the end of the year it cancelled its plans to open stores in Simferopol and Odessa, citing the financial crisis as the reason. There were also reports that the company wants to close its branches in Eastern Europe – in Hungary, Bulgaria and Romania – and that it is also considering drawing from Ukraine.
The first Praktiker store in Ukraine opened at the end of 2007 in Makeevka, in the Donetsk Province. There are two other Praktiker stores, in Nikolayev and Lvov.
