Festival "CONSTRUCTION AND ARCHITECTURE  2005"

"Road Building and Construction Machinery 2005"  Trade Show is a part of the Festival

March 23-27, 2005   "Kiev Expo Plaza",  Kiev, Ukraine 

The festival "Construction and Architecture 2005" took place in a new trade center of Kiev "Kiev Expo Plaza". The event included number of trade shows: "Road Building and Construction Machinery", "Roofing and Insulation", " Facing, windows and Doors", "HVAC", "Luminaries and electrical equipment", "Ceramics and hosing hardware", "Landscaping", "Concrete construction". About 1000 exhibitors for 20 countries participated in the festival.

Ukraine Approves Building of Pipeline to Take Russian Gas to Europe

On Friday, March 25, Ukraine’s Anti-Monopoly Committee gave a green light to the plan to build a new transit gas pipeline that would boost exports of Russian natural gas to Europe.

Russia’s gas monopoly Gazprom and Ukraine’s state-owned oil and gas company Naftogaz Ukraine agreed on plans to build a new pipeline in 2004. The new 200km (120 mile) pipeline will be built from Bohoradchany in Western Ukraine to Uzhgorod in the Carpathian mountains, located on the border with the European Union. The construction cost is estimated to equal $50M.

The pipeline is a part of a bigger plan to set up an international consortium that will manage a huge and somewhat outdated network of Ukraine’s gas pipelines.

Reconstruction of Paton Bridge o/r Dnepr

Corporation Kievavtodor informed about up-coming project of Paton Bridge reconstruction.
Project development bid's dead line is March 31. Project documentation shall be prepared by December.
Reconstruction will include steel structures replacement or renovation dependently of structures conditions. Vast of work to be done on the deck.
Bridge was built in 1953, total length 1.54km, deck width 21m.

Investing in Russia and Ukraine

New York hosted the 9th Annual Conference "Investing in Russia and Ukraine" organized by Sachs Associates together with Bloomberg. The forum which has become the leading US based event on CIS markets brings together 500 leading CIS corporates, bankers, money managers and representatives of rating agencies to discuss investment climate of Russia and Ukraine, the future of their capital markets as well as business opportunities in energy sector.

A high-ranking Russian government official admitted the case of the YUKOS Oil Company was detrimental for the domestic financial market last year, but said the situation is improving. “The trust of investors to the Russian financial market is returning and the situation is currently not bad”, Oleg Vyugin, the head of the Federal Service for Financial Markets.

UkrAvto Builds Car Sales and Services Center

The biggest Ukrainian auto service provider UkrAvto starts construction of the new Sales and Services Center (22 Moscow Av, Obolon district, Kiev).

The project was prepared by BIP-MP architectural company. Architect Tatiana Grigorieva says - Center will be built on 6.4 acres lot. There will be a three story building (6,300 sqm), two service stations ( 4,700 sqm), a carwash, 249 spaces parking lot, and a gas station.

Ukraine and Germany to Cooperate in Gas Delivery

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will discuss the possibility of creating a gas transportation consortium at their meeting today, Alexey Ivchenko, CEO of the Naftogaz Ukrainy company, has told reporters today. Ukraine believes that the consortium should be created on a parity basis by Ukraine, Germany and Russia.

However, this consortium should not be based on the existing gas transportation system in Ukraine, and such an option would be inexpedient and would not be in Ukraine's national interests. Instead, a new gas pipeline should be built, Ivchenko noted. He added that calculations required for laying a new gas pipeline had already been made, and such a pipeline would allow the transportation of approximately 30bn cubic meters of gas a year via Ukraine. In Ivchenko's opinion, this project's implementation could be quite fast, provided that all three parties in the consortium show the political will required in connection with this.

The gas pipeline's construction would cost EUR800m and would take 2.5 to 3 years. Financing within the bounds of a new agreement between Deutsche Bank and Naftogaz Ukrainy could be used for this project. As reported earlier, this agreement, signed in Berlin on March 8, 2005, provides for financing totaling EUR2bn.

Foreign Investments in Real Estate in Ukraine

Foreign investments in real estate in Ukraine grow up if compare to 2003:
Hotels and restaurants -4.76 times to $51.5M, construction 1.2 times to $11.6M.
Investments exceeded expectations. Investments in trades were $209.9M, financing $108.6M, in industry $35.6M.
The most active investors are: USA - 15.9%, Cyprus - 15%, UK - 12.7%, Germany - 10%, Austria - 7.3%.

Construction of a New Apartments Building in Darnitskiy District

The biggest in Kiev construction company Kievgorstroy is going to build apartment building on Sribnokilska St in Darnitsrky district of Kiev till 2007. As Kievgorstroy announced it will be a 24 story building. First floor is designed for commercial use. It's included basic interior works and has an option of customized interior for special price.
Planned price is 3,737 UAH per sqm.
Kievgorstroy is planning to increase construction to 80,650,000 sqm if compare to 2004. In the period of time between 1997-2003 Kievgorstroy built 28 buildings of 2,151 apartments (168,426,000 sqm).

Underground Parking - Discussion about Building Codes.

Last Thursday discussion about mandatory number of parking places per apartment took place at the meeting of Kiev City Counsel.
On one hand it is desirable to have two parking places per apartment (there is no mandatory requirements at the moment), Sideway parking became a serious problem of Kiev's streets that has to be resolved. On another hand, construction cost of 1 sq.m is $300 in remote districts of the City, and much more in the Center. Taking in consideration that one parking spot requires about 30 sq.m of total parking area, price of underground parking is significant.
At the moment parking places mostly are sold to the apartment buyers as a part of the property. Mayor Omelchenko mentioned that City should find the way to encourage builders to rent parking to apartment owners. A Committee for further investigation of possible solutions of the parking problem was formed.
